At the Bambi Awards, Michael Jackson—smiling and full of energy—received the award for "Pop Artist of the Millennium" (Pop Artist of the Millennium). In his speech, he urged the children of Germany: "Work hard for your dreams, work hard for your ideals."

He said: "We are Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Hindus. We are black, we are white. We are a community made up of many differences. We don’t need to have wars—complex as we may be, and yet in all simplicity." His words were met with the audience’s excited cheers in Berlin. Michael also made a wish for the children of Germany. He said: "The world needs you. Give life to your dreams. Maybe you’ll become an astronaut, or a doctor, or an artist—and Bambi will be yours!" Michael also expressed how happy he was to be back in Berlin, calling the city one of his favorites, and said: "Berlin, ich liebe dich" ["Berlin, I love you" to the German people]

Before Michael appeared—invited onstage by tennis legend Boris Becker—television viewers and those in attendance watched a video of What More Can I Give. The song, whose video was shown for the first time, was written by Michael and performed by some of the best-known singers. After the video aired, a montage of Michael’s greatest work was also shown, along with explanations about his artistic life and his charitable efforts. The audience—filled with celebrities and prominent figures—stood and cheered at the beginning of Michael’s appearance, and again after he finished his remarks.
