Michael Jackson had a desire to act in a number of specific films. He gave a fine performance in The Wiz. He had his eye on the role of Spider-Man, and wanted to play Professor X in X-Men. Even renowned director Tim Burton wanted to make House of Wax with Michael Jackson.
Hook, made by Steven Spielberg, was another film Michael was keen to appear in. Michael was set to play the role of Peter Pan — he was in fact Spielberg's first choice for the part. Spielberg originally intended to make the film in 1983. The King of Pop was not only going to act in it but also to sing the songs. Unfortunately, at that time the production of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was occupying most of Spielberg's time, and the Hook project was delayed until the following decade. When Spielberg finally had enough time to make the film, Michael declined the role because he did not like the director's vision for the character. In Spielberg's film, Peter Pan is a middle-aged lawyer who has forgotten he is Peter Pan and should never have grown up.
Spielberg: "Michael always wanted to play Peter Pan. I called him and said the film was about a lawyer-type man who goes to save his children and remembers that as a child he was Peter Pan — that he was actually never supposed to grow up. Michael realized at that moment that this was not the Peter Pan he had wanted to make."
Kevin Kline and Tom Hanks were Spielberg's other choices for the role. In the end, Robin Williams appeared in the part. But interestingly, Spielberg was not satisfied with the result and was disappointed with the film. It failed to win critical approval. In a radio interview some time ago, Spielberg admitted that he does not like Hook and expressed hope that he might one day find a way to like at least parts of it.
Spielberg and Michael were friends and had previously collaborated in the early 1980s on the E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial audiobook story, in which Michael was the narrator — a role for which he won a Grammy. Their other collaboration came in Michael's music video for the song "Liberian Girl."
Spielberg has said about Michael Jackson: "I've never seen anyone like Michael. He came from a beautiful world. I wish we could all spend a little time in his world."
