New Edition Says It’s Like Jackson 5

The American boys’ music group “New Edition” (New Edition), active since 1978, has always been compared during its career to the Jackson brothers’ group “Jackson 5” (1964 to 1975), and of course they consider it something to be proud of.

In 2009, after Michael’s death, they performed on stage in his memory at the BET Awards ceremony.

44-year-old Ricky Bell, one of the group’s members, says:

“A beloved person had passed away, and we felt we needed to sing in his memory. It was the Jackson 5 songs that pushed us into this profession and made us become singers.”

He says that being compared to the Jackson 5 is something they view as praise. Their hit song, Candy Girl, also brings to mind ABC—the famous Jackson 5 track.

“We performed their songs at shows and talent competitions. After a while, we wanted to find our place in music and do something so that newcomers would be compared to us. But the fact that they compared us to the Jackson 5 was something else. We never get tired of hearing their songs.”
