Michael Jackson’s Happy Home

Kay Chase, a woman who was the chef at Michael’s home a few months before his death last year, took part in an interview to mark his anniversary and described Michael’s home as full of joy and laughter.

She said the children listened to Michael’s songs for hours, and their favorite track was Remember The Time. Paris also spent endless hours watching her father’s films and videos. “Paris loves nature and animals. We dug a small pit in the ground to collect snails for our snail farm.”

“Prince, who is 12, loved books and movies. He spent hours making animations using apples from the kitchen.”

“Blanket was very cute. Michael had prepared a movie theater for them, and at night he would show them films. He wanted them to watch old black-and-white movies. Blanket became obsessed with the 1930s gangster film ‘Enemy of the People.’ He would run toward me in the kitchen and imitate James Cagney. He imitated his gangster voice perfectly. It was really funny—especially because he was only seven.”

Michael and his three children enjoyed Kay’s company. One time, the kids called her into the kitchen to meet their boyfriend. When she got there...

“The kids had dressed one of Mr. Jackson’s mannequins. It was very realistic, and I was shocked. Mr. Jackson was hiding behind a chair and then suddenly jumped out and said, ‘Got you!’ He loved pranks and messing with people.”

“Those few months were a very happy time. Mr. Jackson was almost like a Willy Wonka father (from the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), with his strange sense of humor.”

Kay also talked about a birthday party that brought tears of joy to Paris’s eyes.

“For her 11th birthday, just two months before his death, Michael hired some members of Cirque du Soleil to perform shows in the garden. It was amazing. One of the guards filmed the birthday ceremony. I know that film is very dear to Paris, and she watches it to remember her father.”

The kids have been given something they call the “Box of Joy”—a decorated shoebox filled with thank-you letters from Michael’s children. They thank him for cooking for them, receive gifts, and become friends with them.

“These letters are precious to me as long as I’m alive. They’re incredibly special.”
