A Musical About Robert Burns Based on Michael Jackson's Songs Is in Production
A musical about the life and works of poet Robert Burns — Scotland's national poet of the 18th century — based on Michael Jackson's songs is reportedly in production.
If you recall, three years ago there was news about songs Michael Jackson composed in the 1990s based on Burns' poetry, which were being preserved by Michael's friend David Gest.
Gest said at the time that these songs were intended to form part of the music for a theatrical musical to be produced by Anthony Perkins and directed by Gene Kelly. However, with the deaths of both artists — in 1992 and 1996 respectively — the project was never realized.
A spokesperson for the Robert Burns Museum confirmed receiving an album of Michael Jackson's songs and expressed enthusiasm about discussions around the project.
Now it has been reported that David Gest has begun production on the musical, with actor John Barrowman of Doctor Who set to play the lead role. The show was initially titled "Red Red Rose" before being renamed to "One Fond Kiss." The musical is set to take to the stage from next year, with Gest himself appearing in the role of "Tam O'Shanter" — the perpetually drunk farmer from Burns' poem of the same name.
