You’re not mistaken! On the ninth day of the London Olympics, Russian girls went into competition wearing Michael Jackson-themed swimsuits and performed to a remix of his music, taking the gold medal from the others.

On Sunday, during the duet blue dance/ballet competition (synchronized swimming), Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina from Russia wore swimsuits with Michael Jackson designs and danced to a remix of “They Don’t Care About Us.” Their performance impressed both the audience and the judges, earning them a score of 98.200 out of 100. No surprise—they also took first place.

Russians have always been outstanding in ballet and gymnastics. As Ishchenko said: “Music and dance flow through the Russian soul.” After this beautiful dance, she told reporters that they practiced for ten hours a day. Why ten hours? Because “physically, it’s not possible to do more than that.”

Their dance to the King of Pop’s music was very impressive and incredibly fast—an outcome of their hard and long training. In fact, by overcoming competitors from other countries, they went to challenge Russia’s high standards in this sport. Romashina says:

“We practiced so much with this song that we were worried we might get bored of it, but we still love it. Michael Jackson is forever.”

Before the Olympics began, in January of this year, they had performed with the same song at the European Championship Cup in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. They named their duet “Michael Forever.” (Photo below)

Of course, it’s not only Russians who are into synchronized swimming with Michael’s songs. Last year, at the World Championship in Shanghai, China, the French team appeared in swimsuits with Michael designs and performed a beautiful routine to Michael’s songs “Billie Jean,” “Jam,” “Thriller,” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin.” (Photo below)

A little earlier than that, the United States synchronized swimming team appeared at the Montreal competition with Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and “Bad.” (Photo below)
