Michael Jackson once said: “Look at the greats and learn from them.” And: “The best way to learn is to watch how the greats work.” He believed that studying the ways of the greats is the right path to learn. Great people who were the best in their profession—those whose talent, creativity, ability, love of their work, and impact on generations are undeniable.

Michael Jackson himself is one of those greats—one of the greatest showmen in the history of entertainment, and, according to many, the greatest showman the world has ever seen. He learned from the greats and became bigger. He became a master of his craft. He penetrated the hearts of women and men, children and the elderly, Black and white—people of every ethnicity and race. Yet, the number of books that study his music and works in a precise, fair, and scientific and artistic way is very small.

In the introduction to his new book, Joe Vogel points to this very issue:

“There are still only a handful of credible and reliable articles that delve deeply and meticulously into Michael Jackson’s art in newspapers and magazines. Although since Michael Jackson’s death in 2009 the number of articles about him has increased, the vast majority of them are rehashes of the past and don’t contain any new awareness.”

This is the bitter truth that Vogel is trying to change by writing books and articles. You have read various articles by him on this very page many times. His new book is a collection of articles about Michael Jackson’s art that were published in magazines. All of these articles were written during the three years after the pop icon’s death.

One interesting point about Vogel is that when recounting what he knows, he never limits himself to just one aspect of Michael Jackson. Instead, he tries to make all dimensions of his art visible to the reader. In this sense, studying his books and articles is a suitable way to gain insight into the depth of this pop icon’s art.
