Paris Jackson: The masks gave us a normal life
Next Sunday, Oprah’s interview with Paris Jackson—the daughter of the King of Pop, whom you previously read about—will air on American television.
Small parts of this interview were shown as previews in the Access Hollywood program hosted by Billy Bush, with LaToya also participating.
In the interview, Paris talks about coping with the loss of her father: “It will never be easy for me.” The subject of the masks that children used to wear on their faces in childhood is never boring or repetitive for the media. Although Prince talked about this in an interview with Oprah two years ago, this show’s producer is still eager to hear this story.
Paris tells Oprah that they only used masks when Michael was with them—so that when photographers were hunting for their images, their faces would not be recognizable to the public:
“At first I was confused and didn’t understand why we had to wear masks. But now I get it. Dad wanted us to cover our faces—he wanted us, as kids, to have a normal life. That way, we could go out for walks when he wasn’t with us without being recognized.... Dad told us that as children he had a hard life and was constantly busy reading in the studio while other kids were playing and having fun. And he wanted us to have a normal life.”
LaToya, Michael’s older sister who was a guest on this important TV program with Billy Bush, confirmed Paris’s statements:
“What Paris says is absolutely true. Michael covered their faces for exactly that reason. When they left the house without him, they could go wherever they wanted without any trouble because nobody knew them. They are now very well-adjusted children... Personally, I think if Michael were alive, he wouldn’t have allowed them to do interviews with the media. He had this parenting approach in mind. But my mother decided that the masks weren’t necessary and that they should face the truth of life.”
Billy Bush: “I always see Paris around school. She’s very happy, cool, and always bouncing around.”
LaToya: “That’s exactly how she is—she’s a very articulate and amazing girl. Michael raised them so well, and my mom is doing it just as well.... I’m really proud of these kids—they’re great and they adapt to their circumstances so well. Prince is also an incredible boy.”
Elsewhere in her interview with Oprah, Paris says that her father, like all parents, disciplined his children—though in a very gentle way:
“If we did something bad, he would punish us. It happened more to me and Blanket because we would fight with each other.”
Laughing, LaToya says: “They would fight with each other, and Michael would separate them and say, ‘No! You stand here, and you go stand in that corner!’”
Billy Bush jokes: “I would’ve liked it too if Michael sent me to the corner of the room.”
