A Michael Jackson Hologram in Las Vegas?

The news about the late Tupac Shakur performing at Sunday night’s concert in the city of Coachella, California has driven everyone crazy. Of course, Tupac didn’t come back to life—this was his hologram, performing onstage alongside rapper Snoop Dogg.

What is holography?All recording or holography is a method of capturing images and producing three-dimensional visuals—meaning data is stored in image form, which is later read by a bank of light sources and lasers.

Now, whispers about a Michael Jackson hologram are starting to circulate. Imagine going to see Cirque du Soleil’s shows at the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas, and then—suddenly—the King of Pop appears right in front of you. The permanent shows “Immortal” are set to be staged at this hotel starting next year, though there has been no mention yet of a Michael Jackson hologram.

Although when MTV interviewed Daniel Lamar, the CEO of Cirque du Soleil, in 2010, he said: “After the Las Vegas shows begin, this will be the city of Michael Jackson, and people from all over the world will flock here to watch the unique technology we bring to the stage.”

At the time, Lamar specifically referred to three-dimensional image technology and holograms. So should we conclude that a Michael Jackson hologram is on the way? His foundation has not said anything about it yet.

Experts believe this technology should be used with extreme caution, because the result could backfire and leave viewers bored. But so far, the Tupac hologram has won everyone over.
