Lionel Richie: Michael Jackson Was Crazy

Lionel Richie, a longtime and close friend of Michael Jackson, says he was the craziest person.

“He was the craziest man I’ve ever seen in my life. In the wrong moments, he would fire off his machine-gun laughter. I remember one time a high-ranking official was giving a speech, and Michael looked around and started cracking up. That made me explode. For me, the real Michael Jackson was like that—funny and crazy.”

Michael Jackson is the godfather of Nicole, Lionel Richie’s daughter. Nicole’s biological parents handed over her guardianship to Lionel Richie and his wife Brenda Harvey when Nicole was three years old because they couldn’t afford the expenses. When Lionel officially adopted Nicole at age nine, he entrusted her godfather role to Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones. Nicole Richie is now a well-known fashion designer.

Lionel says that when he first saw Michael, he was seven years old. Michael played strange jokes on Lionel.

“He would pour itching powder into my hat and put ice in my shoes.”

“I know being at the top must have put a lot of pressure on him. I didn’t like all that stress and anxiety.”
