Michael Jackson: The Billion-Dollar Man

Last month, you read the news about Michael Jackson’s albums becoming a billion-selling record on this page. It was expected that Sony would issue a statement about it, but that didn’t happen.

Guinness World Records in 2007 awarded Michael Jackson a diploma for the best-selling artist of all time—or, in other words, the most successful artist in the entire history of recordings. At that time, it was estimated that Michael’s album sales were more than 750 million copies. This figure included only solo albums released from 1972 onward and did not include albums by the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons. If you count the albums from those two groups as well, the number of sales of Michael’s works would rise above 750 million.

From 2007 to the end of 2011, over a four-year period, sales of Michael Jackson’s albums increased by more than 250 million, and at the start of 2012 it became clear that the King of Pop had sold more than 1 billion albums worldwide over nearly four decades.

Although this record is not strange for Michael, the surprise becomes clear when we realize that sales of Michael’s works over a four-year period equaled the figures that English Wikipedia reports for the careers of major names such as Madonna, Elton John, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Whitney Houston, Frank Sinatra, and Stevie Wonder.
