Michael Jackson fans help his school
The day Michael Jackson’s name came out from under a cover on the front of the Gardner Elementary School hall, fans made history. (News)
Michael was a student at this school years ago. He returned there in 1989 to open the hall that had been named in his honor. (To watch a video of this event click.)
Over the years, he supported this school through his sponsorship. In 2003, following a sexual abuse accusation against Michael, the school covered his name. Although Michael was cleared of all charges in 2005, the cover was not removed. After Michael’s death in 2009, a group of his fans formed to remove the cover from his name. They also had support from other fans around the world. Finally, on October 15, 2010, after a year of relentless effort, their wish came true, and the Los Angeles County Office of Education said that with full pride and respect, they would remove the cover from Michael Jackson’s name because:
"It is important to us to value the impact his art has left behind, as well as his humanitarian services, as part of his legacy."
After this event, the fan team on Facebook, as well as the managers and members of the Michael Jackson One Million Portrait Project, paid to sponsor this school. They ask fans to continue Michael’s path of supporting this school, and in this way tell the Gardner managers that removing the cover from Michael Jackson’s name was the best decision they have made.
