Lawsuit by Michael Jackson products company against his father
Joe Jackson, Michael’s father, promoted his perfume and cologne at last month’s Cannes Film Festival. Claiming that this perfume and cologne is a tribute to his late son, he has become involved in a legal dispute with the company Bravado.
After Michael’s death, his foundation sold the rights to produce products under Michael Jackson’s name and logo to Bravado. Bravado implicitly claims that “Joe Jackson is shamelessly trying to make money off his child’s death.”
The company that produces this perfume and cologne is called Julien Rouas Paris. But Bravado says Rouas never obtained permission to use the name Michael Jackson—meaning these products are illegal.
Bravado has asked a court in Los Angeles to immediately, by order, stop Julien Rouas from selling any products related to Michael Jackson. They are seeking three times the profits from the sale of these products, plus more than $150,000 in penalties. Bravado has also requested $750 in compensation for each perfume or cologne that Julien Rouas sold using the name Michael Jackson.
A Bravado spokesperson says: “The greatness of the name Michael Jackson exposes him to exploitation and makes him the most vulnerable name in the entertainment industry. No one—neither verbally nor in writing—has given Mr. Rouas permission to use his name.”
