Katherine Jackson’s Lawsuit Postponed

Katherine Jackson, Michael’s mother, filed a lawsuit long ago against the concert company This Is It, accusing them of negligence in caring for her child. Recently, it was reported that the court hearing for her lawsuit against AEG will take place in September 2012. The reason for the postponement is the outcome of the trial regarding the alleged murder of the King of Pop, which has been announced. The judge handling Katherine Jackson’s lawsuit believes that the outcome of that trial will affect her case, and that the result will be known by September 2012. AEG was supposed to support 50 Michael Jackson concerts in the city of London. Those concerts were to be held at the O2 Arena. Katherine says that Conrad Murray, accused of killing her son, was hired by the company and is, in a way, responsible for Michael’s death. She believes the company instructed Murray to do whatever was necessary to prepare Michael for the rehearsal sessions. In other words, the company authorized the prescription of any medication for Michael. Michael died two years ago in June due to a heart attack caused by painkillers—especially the anesthetic propofol. Kevin Boyle, Katherine’s lawyer in this case, agrees with the judge that the jury’s verdict regarding Conrad Murray will be decisive for Katherine’s lawsuit. If Murray is found guilty, then Katherine’s lawsuit will focus on proving the relationship between the company and Murray, and the timeline for handling Katherine’s complaint will be shorter. On the other hand, Marvin Putnam, the company’s lawyer, says Murray’s acquittal will benefit the company. But regardless of the outcome, the company remains firm in its position.
