A daring dance by 700 Chinese students
A school in Chongqing, a remote village in the southwest of China, has abandoned the old tradition of teaching children military-style Tai Chi exercises and instead has its students dance to the thrilling “Dangerous” music by Michael Jackson. More than 700 students at the elementary school practice Michael Jackson’s dance every day in the school’s sports field. This is happening despite the rules of the Communist Party in this province, which require all people in the region—including this school and its students—to do military exercises and recite communist songs. The school’s performance in giving its students freedom has surprised many.
It is said that the idea for such a dance practice came from a Philippine prison. There, for a few years now, the prison’s inmates’ Thriller dance has become a tourist attraction for foreigners.
The principal of this elementary school says:
“Students were tired of daily exercises and wanted to try something new, and one of the teachers suggested this dance. This dance is both fun for them and a suitable form of exercise. Although other sports programs are also planned for them, the Michael Jackson dance is their favorite.”
