Fake Michael Jackson Pages Removed from Facebook

The Michael Jackson Foundation has sent the following statement to fan websites:

“In line with protecting Michael Jackson’s legacy and ensuring that correct information is provided by the Foundation and those who help safeguard his legacy to ‘everyone’—not just his fans— the Foundation has allowed Facebook to remove from Facebook all pages related to Michael Jackson except those that are in the Foundation’s possession.

Facebook has warned us that many of these fake and unofficial pages violate Facebook’s terms of use. The problem we face is that while many fan-made pages are excellent, respectful, and informative, many others do not have these qualities—and this can be misleading for old or new fans around the world.

We know that pages that falsely claim to be Michael Jackson’s official page are recognizable to you, but the general public does not have as much awareness and understanding about Michael as you do. We want the information to be made available to the public in the most accurate and correct way through Facebook.

From now on, there will be only one page for Michael Jackson on Facebook, and the Foundation will regularly review and manage it, adding interesting content and topics.

Please note that Facebook will not delete every page that contains Michael Jackson’s name and address. Only pages that contain misleading information and claim to be official or to have ties with companies such as Sony, Ubisoft, Cirque du Soleil, and so on will be targeted by this plan.

We will do our utmost to ensure that fan pages and groups involved in this plan are protected from any harm.

We expect this plan to begin this week or next week. So if you have a Facebook page that contains misleading information and you are interested in keeping that page, manage the content on the page in such a way that it does not cause you to be harmed before the plan results in you losing it.
