Michael album: low budget, big success
Roger Friedman writes that this week, the Michael Jackson album entered the sales charts at the highest position compared to its competitors. Sales of “Michael” were more than 100,000 copies higher than R. Kelly’s and P. Diddy’s albums.
His album sold about 225,000 copies. Meanwhile, his last studio album, Invincible, in October 2001 sold 363,000 copies in its first week of release.
Considering the large budget spent on producing and promoting P. Diddy’s album, Michael’s album—with a low budget—counts as a major success.
However, the album could have been even more successful if Sony had promoted it better.
“They released the bad mix version of Breaking News on Michael’s official website and made fans doubt the credibility of the songs that would appear on the album. That’s very bad, because Breaking News is an excellent song. In the version available on the album, Michael’s voice is clear. If Michael’s fans still have doubts, they’re depriving themselves of a great song.”
“In my opinion, Sony rushed the album release. They had no promotional or marketing plan, and they also had to deal with the negative wave of criticism. If they had waited until spring, they would have come up with a better way to promote and release this album.”
“Michael’s album has many potential singles. Monster, Keep Your Head Up, and Another Day are all fantastic, and Sony should plan to release them.”
