Michael’s Highly Demanded Albums
Within one year of his death, Michael Jackson sold more than 9 million CDs in the United States, with 800,000 of those being his albums with the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons. Meanwhile, sales of his songs online reached 12.9 million. In the UK as well, he was the best-selling artist, with 2.8 million albums and 1.5 million singles.
Billboard’s senior chart expert says that while many prominent and beloved musicians have died over the past 20 years, the impact of Michael Jackson’s death has been unbelievable:
“Last year, when we faced extremely high demand for his songs, we had no experience of any phenomenon we could compare it to. It was a whole unknown territory for us.”
But demand for his songs increased even more in the week leading up to the anniversary of his death. Over this past year combined, the King of Pop sold 35 million album copies worldwide and was the best-selling artist of the year. This is an unprecedented reaction to the passing of a musician.
