Tribute to Michael Jackson at Apollo
On Monday night, June 14, at the Apollo Hall in New York, a special tribute was held for the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, and Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. The host of the star-studded event was Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx.
As previously reported, the Black actor Chris Tucker came on stage to receive an award for Michael, who was introduced at this ceremony as a legend of the Apollo Hall of Fame. Tucker, who was accepting the award on behalf of the Jackson family, said: “Michael was a king—the true King of Pop.”
With his usual sense of humor, he talked about memories of Michael in stores: “We would walk around and people would look at us and realize that he was Michael Jackson, and then all of a sudden I would become his bodyguard.”
At the ceremony, Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony were also honored for their charitable work for children. Lopez told reporters backstage about Michael: “Everyone in this industry has their eyes on Michael. He did everything with a very high standard. Everyone wants to be Michael Jackson.”
