Smokey Robinson Talks About Sunday’s Ceremony

Smokey Robinson, a veteran and prominent composer, says that attending the Grammys tribute to Michael was a source of pride for him. Behind the scenes, he told reporters that Michael was his little brother and that he feels proud to do something in tribute to him. On Sunday, he sang Michael Jackson’s Earth Song on stage alongside Celine Dion, Usher, Carrie Underwood, and Jennifer Hudson. “I’m really proud of the celebration we put together for Michael. The song that was performed carried a big message for all of us. I hoped people would listen more than they would just watch. This song is for us. We have to be aware and know what we’re doing to nature—and do something before it’s too late.” He said he has not yet recovered from the death of his friend: “Michael was my little brother, and his death was a shock to me. It had an immediate impact on me.” Smokey says he was moved by the children’s speech at Sunday’s ceremony: “The children opened up a window to Michael for us and allowed us to understand what a great man Michael is in their eyes.
