The Best-Dressed, But Not the Most Successful

Michael Jackson was the most creative, best-dressed, and most shy student at the private high school Cal Prep—but apparently his classmates didn’t have much hope for his success.

On October 9, during an auction of Michael Jackson memorabilia in Los Angeles, the Cal Prep high school yearbook for Encinо for 1976 sold for $3,500. According to this yearbook, Michael had won votes in fields that all of us can probably guess. He was the best-dressed, the most creative, and the shyest student in high school—but not the person with the highest chance of success. The honor of that title went to Scott Eschdan, one of the school’s 90 students. He probably is a successful man now, but we haven’t heard anything about him. In 2006, Michael was recognized by Guinness World Records as the most successful showman and entertainer in the history of the world.

Michael signed the cover of this 68-page yearbook in black ink and wrote:

“To a very nice girl. With love. Michael Jackson.”

This signature was taken by one of Michael’s classmates. This is the only high school yearbook signed by Michael Jackson that has been identified so far.

During this auction, held on October 8 and 9 by Profiles in History auction house in the Casablanca Hills area of Los Angeles, the stage outfits that Michael and his brothers—Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon—wore during the Jackson Five era were sold.

A yellow tie that 13-year-old Michael wore while singing “I’ll Be There” in the first episode of Diana Ross’s TV show in 1971 was also part of the auction.

But the most expensive memorabilia among Michael’s clothing was a red, round-neck jacket that Michael wore at the 1981 American Music Awards. At that ceremony, he received two awards for the album Off The Wall.

Another item was a white men’s hat with the name “Michael Jackson” printed inside in gold.

The glove that Michael wore onstage in 1984 during the Victory Tour was also sold for $70,800.
