A crater on the surface of the Moon has been named “Michael Joseph Jackson.” The man known for his Moonwalking now has a crater on the Moon named after him. Lunar Republic, the international organization supporting space exploration, has announced research on the Moon’s sphere and space travel, stating that the crater Posidonius J in the Lake of Dreams on the Moon’s surface has been named “Michael Joseph Jackson” in honor of Michael Jackson and as a tribute to him.

The crater is 22 kilometers in diameter and 650 meters deep. It is located near a 4.86-kilometer landform in the Lake of Dreams. Michael bought that land in 2005 for about $33,000. He also has land in the Sea of Vapors. Michael is one of the most property-rich owners on the Moon. The crater Michael Joseph Jackson is not among the lands purchased by this modern music legend; it has been named purely as an honor. The decision to name this crater was announced following a special meeting with the board of trustees of the Lunar Republic Society on Monday morning. This naming had been proposed by Michael’s fans and other Moon landowners after the death of the pop legend. The crater must be identified by its full name, “Michael Joseph Jackson,” so it won’t be confused with the crater of the Scottish astronomer John Jackson (1887–1958). In Michael’s life, the Moon has become a symbol. The name of his dance, the name of his autobiography, and the emblem of his Neverland ranch—all carry Moon-related meanings. He also made a song called Scared Of The Moon, which in 2004 was released as a demo on the second disc of the Ultimate Collection. He once claimed that on a plane trip he saw a flying saucer.
