U.S. Congress fell silent in honor of Michael Jackson

Robert Gibbs, White House spokesman, said at a press conference on Friday that reporters apparently felt embarrassed to ask about President Obama’s opinion on Michael Jackson’s death, even though he is a devoted fan of music. Gibbs said that on Friday morning he spoke with the President about Michael Jackson’s death, and Barack Obama told him: "Michael Jackson was definitely an amazing performer and a music icon." Robert Gibbs then added: "I think all of us remember hearing his songs and watching his moonwalk during the Motown 25 television program. But the President also said that Jackson had bitter and sad moments in his life. He sympathizes with the Jackson family and the fans who are mourning him." U.S. lawmakers also paid tribute to Michael on Friday, calling him a source of inspiration for singing and dancing. Diane Watson, a Democratic representative from the state of California, said: "We stand up in respect for the star that has gone to the sky. A young man has left the earth. But now he lives among the stars. And he was a talented person—with many talents—who entertained the world with his energetic performances, with the songs he wrote, and with his dance style." Watson said that lawmakers offer their condolences and heartfelt sorrow to Michael Jackson’s family, friends, and also to his millions of fans around the world. Jesse Jackson, a Democrat and a family friend, also said: "God divides blessings, mercy, and talent among all his children, and he had a special gift for Michael Jackson. With that divine gift, this young man, Michael Joseph Jackson, influenced the world and transformed it. His heart could not be bigger than it was. And yesterday, it stopped. I am here today on behalf of a generation to thank God for giving us the opportunity to live in his era, during his lifetime. With this introduction, we ask members to stand in silence for a moment in his honor." Barbara Lee, another Democratic representative and chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, said in a statement that Michael Jackson was: "An icon who inspired several generations around the world through his songs and dance. His contribution to American music is without limit, and his genius and talent will remain for many years to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael’s family.
