Naming a hectare of forest in Russia after Michael Jackson
Ten Michael Jackson fans in Russia gave Michael a unique gift. Katja Shabanova writes:
"We are supporters of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The WWF’s goal is to stop the destruction of the natural environment of plants and to build a future in which people live in harmony with nature.
In 1376, seventy thousand hectares of forest in the Altai region of Russia burned in a fire. This was truly a natural disaster. Strong winds were blowing and the speed reached 24 meters per second. It was almost impossible to save the forest. Such fires are very unusual. Rows of pine trees with widths ranging from 6 to 40 kilometers were scattered across hundreds of kilometers of Altai grasslands. These trees grew on sandy hills and prevented storms of debris and the shifting of large amounts of sand, and they were a safeguard and protector for many animals and plants.
Now, instead, only the burned remains of trees can be seen—forests full of conifer trees are gone. If people do not take action to restore part of the burned forest, about three and a half million hectares of land will be lost. For the Altai region, this is an imminent disaster. For this reason, the Altai regional forestry organization and WWF worked on a restoration program for this area. Everyone can cooperate in this program by donating money. The donor can name the area whose restoration they helped with.
We helped by donating money to WWF to dedicate a hectare (between three and five thousand trees) of forest, where the trees will be planted in spring (Farvardin–Ordibehesht 1382).
This hectare was named after Michael Jackson. Near this area, a sign with the name Michael Jackson will soon be placed, and this area of the Altai forest in Russia will always be known as Michael Jackson.
