Off the Wall Album to Be Re-Released with a Documentary
The Michael Jackson Estate has announced in a statement that it will release Michael Jackson's Off the Wall album alongside a documentary film about the album.
The release date for the new collection will be February 26. The album will be released in two separate formats: CD/DVD and CD/Blu-ray.
The collection will include the original album on CD or DVD and a documentary film on DVD or Blu-ray.
This new documentary, directed by Spike Lee, is titled "Michael Jackson's Journey from Motown to Off the Wall." Spike Lee previously directed the documentary Bad 25. As announced earlier, the documentary is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24. A television broadcast has also been scheduled for February 5 on SHOWTIME.
Unlike previous collections, no additional or remixed tracks will be released with this new package. The reason is that this album was produced during the early years of Michael's professional career, when he had not yet written a large volume of songs specifically for an album. In later years, Michael would select songs for his albums from among the many works he created. Furthermore, Michael did not film the making of his music videos or other behind-the-scenes events using personal cameras during this period, so relatively few images from this era are available. As a result, the Estate decided to take a different and simpler approach to this new collection. There are no major surprises as in previous releases, but the Estate says it has made a deliberate effort to use this album to introduce Michael Jackson to a new generation of fans who have recently come to music, and to broaden his fan community.
