Joseph Jackson Suffers a Stroke

joseph.jpg Joe Jackson, Michael's father, suffered a stroke this Sunday in Brazil during his 87th birthday celebrations. Jackson participates actively every year in the planning and hosting of grand birthday celebrations for himself, but this year that activity appears to have caused him trouble. Over the past several days in Brazil — as the patriarch of the famous Jackson family, with Michael as its brightest star — he had been attending parties and ribbon-cutting ceremonies at project openings. An assistant and a French woman who is his latest discovery accompanied him on the trip to Brazil. Joe Jackson, who years ago managed his teenage sons' group "The Jackson 5," occasionally takes on the management of a young female singer's career. Jackson was transferred to the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo after exhibiting symptoms of weakness and visual disturbances resulting from the stroke. He also has diabetes. Sources reported that following the stroke, during medical examinations, his heart stopped for 10 seconds. The day after the stroke, Jackson underwent surgery at the hospital and a pacemaker was implanted in his heart. Jermaine Jackson wrote on Twitter that the results of his father's brain scan were not as bad as they had feared, and that he is currently under observation in hospital. He also thanked the doctors and nurses at the Albert Einstein Hospital. Just hours before the attack, Jackson had written on his website: "In the seventies, we used to tour Brazil with my boys. When we went from Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo for the next show, we ran into a problem. Our musical equipment didn't arrive from Rio de Janeiro in time. We waited, and the crowd waited too, but eventually their patience ran out. They got angry and started throwing things at us. Miss Rose Fine, the teacher, was also with us. We all ran toward the bus to take shelter in it. What a moment that was. Finally, at 8 o'clock in the evening our equipment arrived at the venue and we started the show despite everything that had happened. My boys worked extremely hard and won over the crowd. From there we went to Bahia. A few years ago when I came to Brazil, I decided to visit Bahia again. Michael filmed one of my favorite music videos, 'They Don't Care About Us,' in Bahia."
