Yesterday, Joseph Jackson, Michael's father, accepted an award on behalf of his son at the R&B Hall of Fame ceremony.
Joe Jackson is himself a member of this Hall of Fame and also received a lifetime achievement award at the same ceremony. Joe Jackson also received on stage a beautiful painting of the King of Pop created by artist Nicolosi.
Speaking in the city of Canton, he announced: "I was stunned to see the outpouring of love and feeling from this city for my son. I was deeply moved by the love and appreciation shown to me, and I thank all of you for this beautiful evening. To artist Nicolosi, thank you for this beautiful painting created in honor and memory of my son."
On this same day, in addition to the King of Pop, 14 other music groups and solo artists — including Marvin Gaye and Whitney Houston — were inducted into the Hall.
Rhythm and blues music is known as the music of Black Americans, but the Hall of Fame has also welcomed White members. Although this genre was founded by African Americans, its influence and reach extended beyond racial boundaries. The R&B Hall of Fame now holds that inductees are selected not on the basis of color or race, but on the basis of their impact on the rhythm and blues genre.
Inductees' primary field of work must be rhythm and blues, they must have more than twenty years of experience in the music industry, and must have left a significant impact. However, chart-topping is not one of the requirements.
One difference between the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the R&B Hall of Fame is that Rock Hall inductees can only be nominated by music industry professionals, current members, and certain media figures, whereas R&B Hall inductees can be nominated by anyone.
The R&B Hall of Fame is also working to establish a permanent headquarters and museum to display information and memorabilia from its members. The Hall says it needs political support to establish this museum, something it was unable to achieve in Cleveland.
