Michael Jackson Song Used in Jeep Summer Ad Campaign
Viewers this summer are encountering Jeep car commercials featuring Michael Jackson's voice and music.
The broadcast of these commercials, which began in early May, is the result of a collaboration between Epic Music and the Jeep automotive company. The "Call of Summer" advertising campaign features Michael's new song "Love Never Felt So Good" — the only single released from the Xscape album. The collaboration has produced four 30-second commercials. Broadcasting will continue throughout the summer.
The idea for the campaign took shape in late March, when L.A. Reid, head of Epic and one of the producers of Xscape, played the new Michael album for Olivier François, head of marketing at Jeep.
L.A. Reid says: "I played him almost all the songs. When it came to LNFSG, he said that was the one — it was exactly what he'd been looking for."
François says that when he heard the song at the Epic offices, he stood up and started dancing. He has expressed hope that these new commercials will have the same effect on their viewers.
When François was asked about the budget for this ad campaign, he did not give a precise figure but said it was more expensive than the $17 million campaign featuring rapper Diddy promoting Fiat.
These commercials reference things like the popular American sport of backyard basketball and the 2014 Brazil World Cup.
Five years after Michael Jackson's passing, his commercial brand shows no sign of weakness. Since his death, Michael Jackson has sold 12.8 million album copies in the United States. The music documentary This Is It, with $261 million, has been the highest-grossing of its kind in cinema history. His Immortal tour — a collaboration between the Estate and Cirque du Soleil — became the ninth best-selling tour in history last year, with $325 million in revenue across 407 shows and 3 million audience members. Another successful Michael Jackson show, "ONE," is also running in Las Vegas.
So it comes as no surprise that Jeep would seek a Michael Jackson song to boost sales of its vehicles.
It should also be noted that another song from Michael's new album, "Slave to the Rhythm," has been used to promote Sony's new Xperia smartphone series, as you read about earlier here.
