In February, news had arrived that Kobe Bryant — one of the legends of American basketball who happened to be a friend of Michael Jackson — intended to pay tribute to his old friend with the release of a new series of athletic shoes. These shoes bearing Michael Jackson's imprint have now been unveiled.
At first glance, these shoes may not appear to bear any trace of Michael Jackson — but that is only if you don't know that the color purple signifies royalty, power, and wealth. And if you look at the sole of the shoe, you will see a pattern of the lunar surface pressed into it, so that someone wearing these shoes would seem to moonwalk across the surface of the moon. (Moonwalk: Michael Jackson's famous foot dance, known for its anti-gravity effect resembling a walk on the moon's surface.)
Kobe Bryant has referred to Michael Jackson as his "teacher":
"It may sound strange, but it's true. He was my coach and he conditioned me. We always talked about how he prepared himself to create music and give concerts. He taught me the paths he had traveled himself. How he made Thriller and Bad — he told me all of it in complete detail. That was all the credibility I needed — to know that I must focus on my work and never slacken. Because what he did and the way he did it was through the power of mind and spirit. He helped bring me to a level where I could win three championships playing against Shaq (Shaquille O'Neal). That came from the preparation and lessons I received from him. And it's all about growth and progress. It's because of the mindset I have — not because of brute strength. I didn't get this from (Michael) Jordan. I didn't get this from other champions. I got this from Michael Jackson." (Read more)
Bryant also said at Michael's memorial service, alongside Magic Johnson, another American basketball legend:
"We know nobody performed on stage the way Michael did. But Michael was a real human being who, when he was not on stage, served people just as much as he did on stage. Michael cared about the underprivileged. His name is recorded in the Guinness World Records as the most philanthropic pop star."
The Michael Jackson Kobe 9 Elite Low shoes will be available at Nike.com starting July 12.
