A Glimpse of Michael Jackson’s HIStory Concert in Munich

On July 4 and 6, 1997, Michael Jackson held two concerts at the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium in Munich, Germany. At first, he was determined to release the concert film from July 6 on DVD for Christmas vacation. For this purpose, the film was edited to include more footage of the audience members whom Michael held in high esteem and gave special attention to. The sound quality was also greatly improved so that the audience’s excitement could be heard. The HIStory tour concerts were recorded with HD cameras.

However, this DVD was never officially released because our perfectionist king wasn’t satisfied with his performance in this concert. He believed that his singing and dancing had declined due to contracting influenza and a sore throat. Although the concert was broadcast on many networks, this is exactly why the Munich concert became one of the most accessible HIStory shows.

Regarding the Munich Olympic Stadium, it’s worth noting that the King of the Stage had gone onstage there five times, and on every one of those five occasions, the stadium was packed with people and all tickets were sold out. The first time was during the Bad tour on July 8, 1988, when 72,000 people attended. The second concert on June 27 was as part of the Dangerous tour, with a crowd of 72,000. The next two concerts on July 4 and 6, 1997, during the HIStory tour, together hosted a crowd of 145,000. Michael’s last concert in this stadium was on June 27, 1999, when Michael thrilled another crowd of 72,000 with the charity concert Michael Jackson and Friends.
