Michael kept the designs

"It was really interesting: when we drew a design for Michael, he would pick it up and keep it for himself. Because whenever we went to Elizabeth Taylor’s house, we’d see that the walls of her bathroom were covered with designs of different outfits. Michael would take half of our designs and, jokingly, say that he didn’t want these designs to end up—eventually—in someone else’s bathroom."

Bush’s favorite piece

If you were Michael Bush and you had to prepare all that clothing and jewelry for the King of Pop, what do you think your favorite outfit or piece among all those thousands would be?

If you’re thinking about anti-gravity shoes, then you guessed right.

Michael Bush considers these shoes to be challenging. When Michael ordered the making of such shoes, Bush and Tompkins faced a challenge they had never experienced before. To make the boards for these shoes (a display sample of the invention: a wooden board with two clamps on it, to which the shoe’s heel would be hooked), Bush and Tompkins had to do more than just design the clothing—they also had to handle the architecture.

But it was precisely these challenges and difficulties, in Bush’s view, that revealed and nurtured his talent for designing and sewing clothes. He says that fortunately he had two friends—Michael and Dennis—beside him, so that with their help he could discover his talent and pursue the job he loved.

The outfit Michael didn’t like

Have you seen the BAD outfit? Who hasn’t heard about its many zippers? Now guess what the outfit was like that couldn’t catch Michael’s attention.

Maybe you guessed correctly... it didn’t have a zipper!

Bush says: "We designed a leather jacket with patches sewn onto it and it had no zipper. The first time I saw it, I hated it. But when I put it on, I liked it more and more."

In 1993, Michael wore this jacket to accompany his dear friend Elizabeth Taylor at the American Film Institute (AFI) Foundation ceremony. Elizabeth Taylor was receiving an award for a lifetime of artistic achievement, and Michael—despite his injured foot from dance rehearsals—refused to let her go without him.

Bush says this jacket became one of the most famous, and many photos were taken of it.
