Jermaine Jackson: Barack Obama owes Michael
Jermaine Jackson says that if it weren’t for his brother Michael, Barack Obama would not be the President of the United States right now.
On the night of the anniversary of his brother’s death, Jermaine told the Independent newspaper how disappointed he was with the behavior of his fellow countrymen. In Jermaine’s view, America didn’t deserve Michael—and doesn’t have him now. “I think America disappointed Michael. If he had been from any other country in the world, they would have built an eternal monument for him and displayed it for his contributions to music.”
Referring to Michael’s 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey—during which he first revealed that he had vitiligo—he said: “The disclosure of his illness made clear both his African-American identity and also made Oprah famous.”

Oprah’s support for Barack Obama during the early stages of the presidential election helped him become the final nominee of the Democratic Party.
“Michael invited (Oprah) to Neverland (his ranch) and this interview caused Oprah’s image to be sent to 90 countries. She became famous and successful. What did she do with that success? She used it to support Obama.”

Jermaine also spoke about the English tabloid newspapers and the impact they had on his brother’s life. He blamed The Sun for inventing the insulting phrase “Wacko Jacko,” which had been used for years in the media to refer to Michael.
“The British tabloids’ mindset for destroying Michael was very upsetting because it denied his humanity. They mocked him like a caricature.”
The Truth-Seeking Committee, which was formed after the scandal of “News of the World phone hacking,” is currently investigating The Sun’s wrongdoing. Jermaine says:
“I’m glad the English media are learning about the impact of the activities they’ve carried out. It seems people are getting closer to understanding the reality of the matter, and the truth is gradually coming to light. My question is: why didn’t anyone understand him while he was alive?”
Jermaine says the Jackson family unanimously believes that the full truth about Michael’s death has not been revealed. They still don’t know what happened on the night Michael died. In addition, Conrad Murray, the doctor who has been blamed for his murder and is currently in prison, is not willing to cooperate with anything and continues to call himself innocent.
“We still don’t know which people came and went to his house on the night he died. Maybe one day we’ll get an answer, but relief isn’t possible.”
The police erased the closed-circuit camera footage that contained all comings and goings to Michael’s home on the night of his death, and later said they were unaware of its possible importance.
Jermaine adds: “No one knew Michael as well as we did. He wasn’t abnormal or strange. He was simply different. And only after his death is it that people gradually come to know him.”
