Reggae Again for Michael Jackson

Some top-tier reggae artists from Jamaica got together some time ago to produce a tribute album for Michael Jackson titled Still The King. The album was released on April 10 on iTunes.

Chaka Demus, The Players, Tonto Metro, Deontee, Nadine Sutherland, Carlton Coffey, Clon, Bradley Brown, and several others are among the artists contributing to this album. The album’s producer, Henry Kario, says his goal in creating a tribute album to Michael Jackson is to introduce reggae to more people who aren’t very familiar with this style of music. He believes that covering and releasing Michael’s songs in a reggae album can attract listeners for them.

Abijah is another singer collaborating on this album. He has covered three songs: Remember the Time, Human Nature, and Shake Your Body. He says his reason for joining the album is his love for the King of Pop and adds:

“I’m a die-hard fan. I really admire his art, and I think he’s one of the few people who left his marks on the earth. Singing his songs on this album makes me happy and proud. I did this for Michael.”

Nitty Kutchie, who handled the cover of Bad, also says he loves Michael’s music:

“Music… I love Michael Jackson’s music. I fell in love with the idea of making an album of his songs. Bad is a beautiful song, and if I love a song, I’ll sing it.”

Nadine Sutherland, the woman who covered Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough, talks about her love for the King of Pop:

“I respect and admire Michael Jackson. When he died, the world fell apart for me. I wanted him to return to the stage and show his genius to the world again. I can’t express the pride I feel from collaborating on this album with words. I truly love his music.”

This album also has a charitable goal. According to Henry Kario, the proceeds from the song They Don’t Care About Us, covered by Carlton Coffey, will go to the family of the murdered teenager, Trayvon Martin. The song has a social theme and is a protest against injustice and racial and ethnic discrimination.

Kario says: “MJ was a strong defender of children’s rights. We also wanted to repay a debt.”
