The eleventh episode of the third season used Michael Jackson songs, and it had been keeping everyone waiting for a long time with heavy promotions.
According to officially announced statistics, this episode was the most-watched segment of Glee, with 9.1 million live viewers. It also became the most successful show of the day among TV networks, with a 16% increase in viewership and a rating of 3.6 out of 10.
Sales of the music from this episode also surpassed sales of the rest of the series. All 10 of Michael’s covered songs in this show placed among the top 100 songs on the music charts, and during the first week, 500,000 copies of them were downloaded on iTunes. In this way, the show’s music landed within the top 30 ranks of the chart.
The best-selling musical track from this episode was the covered song “Smooth Criminal,” performed by Glee members Gasteen and Rivera in this episode. The song sold 108,000 copies on iTunes and became the third most successful song in the history of Glee. Gasteen said that performing this song alone was something to be proud of for them—let alone when it also received a great response from Michael’s fans.
Billboard, in its review of this episode—an homage to Michael Jackson—wrote:
“Compared to earlier episodes, this episode included more dancing and singing, but fewer adult dialogues and big scenes. It seems the producers decided to let the music speak for itself. The story was strong, imaginative, and sharp.”
Entertainment Weekly also called the Michael Jackson episode much better than the episodes of Lady Gaga and Madonna, which were described with the phrase “just entertaining,” and wrote:
“This program was a confirmation of the title ‘Michael Jackson: King of Pop’! We witnessed the best and most exciting performances of this season.”
The Washington Post critic also said:
“This episode contained the most memorable dialogues in the history of Glee.”
However, he criticized the lack of innovation in how Michael Jackson’s songs were performed in the series, and considered the dances to be weak imitations of Michael Jackson’s performances.
