A Species of Sea Lobster Named After Michael Jackson

A Dutch archaeologist named René Frij—of Kent State University in the UK—has named a new species of prehistoric sea lobster “Michael Jackson”!

This archaeologist, along with some of his students, found the fossil of the named lobster on June 25, 2009—the day Michael Jackson died—during an exploration operation in northern Spain.

This fossil belongs to a rare species of sea lobster, and since this species was being discovered for the first time, Frij preferred to give it a new and special name.

“It was a special day. On that day, a special artist had passed away. That’s why I decided to name this lobster Michael Jackson.”

Adil Klammp Meekr, a geologist who is a PhD candidate at Kent University in this field, says: “Michael Jackson’s music will remain alive for a very long time and will continue to affect people, so I think it’s an appropriate name for this lobster.”

This lobster dates back to the ancient “Cretaceous” period, 65 to 145 million years ago—when dinosaurs were still living on Earth.
