An Animated Advertisement Featuring Michael Jackson

In 1989, an advertisement inspired by Michael Jackson—featuring California Raisins—was shown.

The California Raisins were the name of a cheesy, animated clay music group that also promoted products. The lead singer of the group was named Buddy Miles. The Raisins were popular from the mid to late 1980s and even won an Emmy Award.

In this video, the popular song “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye is used. Michael wasn’t allowed to sing in this ad because he had an exclusive advertising contract with Pepsi, but at the end of the commercial, he spoke instead of his clay animation character.

In the ad, clay Michael Jackson is asleep and sees himself as “Michael Raisins,” performing a Marvin Gaye song on stage. He wakes up and thinks that the dream he had was because of something he ate: “something I ate.”

The commercial was shown in theaters in July 1989 and made its way to television later that same year.
