A Painting Competition With Michael Jackson

Jonathan Moffett writes to us this time about the memory of his painting competition with Michael:

“Michael was an incredible painter. I joined the Jacksons in 1979 on the Destiny tour.

One time in the spring of that year, a week after I had rejoined the group, he drew a painting with ink on the drawing board that I had brought along with a lamb. I could barely and without much success try to depict what he had drawn with a pencil.

Anyway, whether we were touring or on our own bus traveling from place to place, he was drawing. You wouldn’t believe it.

When I heard from James McFadden, my friend and the music director of the tour, that I could draw, Michael suggested we set up a painting competition between ourselves.

In 10 minutes he created a masterpiece, and I threw my painting into the trash.

But man! He signed his painting for me and gave it to me. I’ve been looking at it all these years. I framed it and protect it like a treasure. This painting is among my most valuable possessions. It’s amazing... believe it!”
