Unseen Photos from Michael Jackson’s Concert in Brunei
On July 16, 1996, Michael was invited by Brunei’s royal family to hold a concert in honor of the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s 50th birthday. Sultan Hassanal arranged this private celebration in the garden of his palace (Jerdang Park in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of that country) and invited only 4,000 people. Footage of Michael’s concert in Brunei is extremely rare, and what is available on the internet is generally lacking in good sound and picture quality. That’s why the Brunei concert has captured the attention of every collector’s mind. However, some time ago, a version recorded from a VHS tape with quality was leaked onto the internet.
This concert, which took place before the History Tour began, was very similar to Michael’s Dangerous Tour (1993). The outfits and stage design were created to keep the details of the History Tour hidden in the form of the Dangerous Tour. In this concert, for the first time, two songs from Michael’s History album were performed: “You Are Not Alone” and “Earth Song.” And the last live performances of “Jam,” “Human Nature,” “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” and “She’s Out of My Life” took place as well.
This concert was also among Michael’s final shows in which he performed “Billie Jean” and “Beat It” live on stage.
Now, after 15 years, a number of never-before-seen photos from Michael’s rehearsals, the royal family’s visit, and the main concert performance will be published in Michael Jackson magazine (MJJMAGAZINE). These photos were pulled from the official Michael Jackson company archive, MJJ Productions, and MJJ Magazine has received permission to publish them.
The magazine’s editor says they believe the second anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death is the right time to release these photos:
"Fifteen years is also the period of the return of crystal (glass). We want to crystallize this concert by praising the only artist who could make us fly by walking on the moon."
