The iconic Thriller jacket goes up for sale
The jacket Michael Jackson wore in the legendary Thriller trailer video in 1983 will be sold at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, California on June 25 and 26. The expected sale price is between $200,000 and $400,000, but it is expected to exceed $400,000.
This sale is part of the “Music Icons Memorabilia” auction held every year around the same dates. This year’s auction will offer 600 lots of memorabilia from jazz, pop, rock, Motown, and more.
Darren Julien, head of Julien’s Auctions, says: "There is no other jacket as famous and recognizable as Thriller, or one that has played such a role in defining fashion. This jacket is the most recognized and notable in popular culture."
Hundreds of thousands of jackets have been made based on the Thriller jacket, but the one being sold is the exact jacket Michael Jackson wore in the Thriller clip. Thriller is the first and only music video whose name has been recorded among enduring cinematic works.
On the jacket’s sleeve it says, “With love, Michael Jackson.” He had dedicated this jacket to Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush, his well-known costume designers.
It has been said that two tamed tigers belonging to Michael Jackson—named Thriller and Sabio—will benefit from this auction. Part of the proceeds from the jacket’s sale will be donated to an animal care center in California where these two Bengal tigers also live.
When Michael Jackson closed the Neverland Ranch in 2006, the tigers were taken to this center. The Shambala center’s managers have thanked Julien’s Auctions on their website for this generosity.
Other auction items include a T-shirt Michael wore in the 1995 Scream clip, and a sleek black glove he wore at the 1984 American Music Awards. This glove is expected to sell for $30,000.
In addition to Michael, memorabilia from The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Madonna, Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and many others will also be sold.
