Kadir Nelson, who created the cover design for Michael Jackson’s new album, said in his interview that he became interested in Michael after the release of the album Thriller when he was 8 years old, and from that time—and throughout his schooling—he had been drawing him. In his biggest work, a painting measuring 2.7 by 1.4 meters, Kadir Nelson painted 50 portraits of Michael. He says Michael had relationships with many people, especially women, in his life, and he decided to depict some of these women in his painting. Lisa Marie Presley, his first wife; Naomi Campbell, who appears in one of his videos; Tatum O’Neal, a friend from his teenage years; Brooke Shields, a friend from his young adulthood; and Diana Ross, who supported him and his brothers as members of the newly formed Motown music company—are among them. Of course, in the original version of the work, Elizabeth Taylor, Oprah Winfrey, Deborah Rowe, and Madonna were also included, but because they did not agree, they were removed from the final version, and their images did not appear in the photo of this painting that was published in the news.
