9 years ago, around these days, after the terrorist attacks in New York, USA, Michael Jackson asked his employees to find those of his fans who had attended his concert in this same city a few days earlier (the 30th anniversary of Michael’s solo career in music) and, if they had become victims of the terrorist attacks, to support them financially. Michael helped those fans who were victims of the incident and couldn’t afford the costs of what happened.What More Can I Give?
The title is a song (download link at the end) that, after the terrorist attacks that resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 ordinary people, was performed on stage by Michael and a group of artists on October 21 at a charity concert to help the victims.
As the songwriter and composer of this work, Michael said that the line “What More Can I Give?” came to his mind in 1999 during a meeting with Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid leader of South Africa. The topic of their conversation was mercy and help.
The song was supposed to be performed at that year’s charity concerts in Munich and South Korea, but not only did that not happen—because of opposition and obstruction by Sony Music, the song was never released officially. A song written to save the world.
After the terrorist attacks, Michael rewrote the song and recorded it alongside many singers, including Beyoncé, Luther Vandross, Céline Dion, Mariah Carey, and Usher, with the idea of raising millions of dollars to help the victims of September 11. A Spanish version of the song was also prepared under the title Todo Para Ti. At the time, Sony opposed the release of these two songs for reasons that were not officially announced.
What More Can I Give was first played at the end of 2002 without official permission from New York radio. The following year, on October 27, 2003, it was made available on the internet for public download, and the digital sales revenue was used to help children’s charities.
Michael said about the impact of the September 11 attack on him:
“I’m not the kind of person who sits in a corner and says, ‘Oh, how terrible it was!’ I’m sorry for what happened!... I want all the people of the world to sing ‘What More Can I Give?’... I want this song to unite all of us people of the world. Because a song like this is like a spiritual prayer—something you repeat again and again. We need peace, we need forgiveness, we need love, we need unity.”
“In my heart, I believe that the music community will become unified and will come to the aid of thousands of innocent victims. Right now, there is a huge need for dollars, and we can each play a role in comforting the victims.”
