Michael’s 50 Reigns on Billboard

In an unmatched career that surrounded him for nearly 50 years, Michael Jackson became one of the most consistent and enduring fixtures on the Billboard chart. But his dominance on the Hot 100—an achievement that has been recorded in the world’s record books—was his most demanding reign.

As a solo artist, 13 of his songs remained at the top of this chart. That number is more than any other male artist in the history of recorded music. Add four more of the songs by the Jackson 5 to that total.

The 50 best songs by Michael on Billboard are ranked based on their performance on the weekly Hot 100 chart. Since Nielsen’s sales-tracking system for music singles began collecting data for Billboard only in 1991, and because many of Michael’s songs were released before that time, measuring the songs solely by sales figures is not enough.

The criteria for ranking these songs was as follows: the songs that were in position 1 on the chart were given the highest weight, while the songs in position 100 were given the lowest weight.
