E-Quan Talks About Michael’s Perfectionism

E-Quan, a Black rapper who has had success collaborating with Michael Jackson on the production of songs in recent years, says the King of Pop was never satisfied with the results. The two prepared many songs for release on Michael’s new album. E-Quan says working with Michael was enjoyable because this king is not selfish, but he is a perfectionist.

“The memories I have of him are mostly about work. He was so focused on creating the right pieces that we didn’t have time to rest. We would chat, but we rarely joked. Because he always said we should take the work seriously and do what we came here (to the studio) to do.”

Although E-Quan knew the songs they made were definitely huge masterpieces, Michael wasn’t sure they were good enough to reach the fans he wanted—so those pieces were not released.

“He was never satisfied. He would say, ‘No, no—we have to make something much better than this.’”

And that much better never happened because the King of Pop’s expectations went far beyond that.

“We can never release the album, because he believes it can always be better than this.”
