TII arrives in less than two months
Sony announced on Monday that the film This Is It—made from Michael Jackson’s last performances on stage—will be released on DVD on January 26, 2010. Pre-orders for the film are now available on Amazon and iTune. Michael died only a few weeks before the start of his concert series in London. The concert tour was called This Is It, and that same title was used for the film. This DVD, which will be released in two parts, describes the preparation and staging of concerts that were never performed.
The first part of the DVD is titled Staging the Return: Beyond the Show, and it covers events before the rehearsals begin. The second part, Staging the Return: The Adventure Begins, focuses on Michael’s performances and his preparation for the concerts.
The film has sold more than $240 million worldwide, and its revenue in the United States has reached $70 million. While initially a limited two-week run was planned for the film, it will likely remain on screens until the end of this year.
The This Is It DVD will be sold in two versions: the standard edition ($28.96) and Blu-ray ($39.95). In addition to the film released in theaters, it includes an extra hour of Michael’s rehearsals.
The advantage of the Blu-ray version over the standard one is that it contains a short video of Smooth Criminal, with scenes from it that were shown during the film. This video was supposed to be shown before the start of Michael’s tour.
Both versions include visual reports about the concert costumes, memories of Michael, and rehearsal tests of the dancers’ performances.
