Michael, the Composer of Sonic 3

Sega’s game, Sonic the Hedgehog 3—better known by the shortened name Sonic 3—turned out to be a “Michael” project. After years of doubt and uncertainty, it was finally put to rest. The game was released in 1994. That year, Michael was asked to compose music for it.

Brad Buxer, the composer of this game, has recently confirmed that he and Michael jointly created the music for Sonic 3. He said Michael wasn’t satisfied with the music they had made for the game, and didn’t want to have his name brought in as a composer and thereby diminish the value of his own name—although the game’s music is nothing short of excellent. Buxer says that at the time it wasn’t possible to produce better audio quality for video games, and Michael was unhappy about that. He didn’t want a relationship with a product that lowered the value of his work.

The game’s tracks are very similar to the songs on Michael’s albums. For example, the music from the Carnival Night Zone section of the game was taken directly from “Jam” from the album Dangerous. And in another part of the game, the music from “Stranger in Moscow” from History is used.
