This Is It On the Way to a $250 Million Sale
Roger Friedman announced in his column on Monday that the film This Is It has sold $185 million worldwide so far, and reaching $250 million in sales is within reach. The film’s sales are more than double those of the Hannah Montana concert film, which last year set a record as the top-selling documentary film about music and concerts.
Friedman also says that last Friday afternoon, Michael’s children went to watch a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game at the Staples Center with AEG CEO Randy Phillips. Kobe Bryant scored 41 points for the Lakers in that game. The children’s babysitter, Grace Rombaba, and Tito Jackson’s two sons were also with them. With AEG security on hand, Michael’s children were able to watch the game without any disruption.
Friedman also said that Michael’s children still haven’t seen their father’s film. Once, an attempt was made to bring them to a movie theater, but the crowds of paparazzi photographers prevented it.
Travis Payne, the choreographer, says that a few days before the release of This Is It, Michael’s children had watched a movie in a cinema and saw a teaser for their father’s film, then asked to watch it. Latoya also said that Paris had always been eager to see the film, but Prince and Blanket’s views on watching the movie have recently turned positive.
The kids weren’t present at their father’s rehearsals at the Staples Center, but they had gone to a studio with him to record short videos for the concerts. Kenny Ortega says:
"Michael and I made 10 short films that were part of the This Is It concerts. Paris tapped me on the shoulder and said, ‘This is the first time I’m seeing Dad filming.’ I think they like filmmaking. Both Prince and Paris were really curious and kept looking around.
