Lisa Marie Presley: Michael Knew His Fate
The following piece has been published by Lisa Marie, the daughter of Elvis Presley, on her blog on myspace. Lisa Marie married Michael in 1994 and separated from him 19 months later.
Lisa Marie Presley says that almost a year after their marriage, Michael predicted that she, like Elvis, would suffer an unexpected and untimely death.
Elvis Presley died in August 1977 at a young age, at 42, while Lisa was 9 years old, at his home at Graceland. In official documents, the cause of his death was listed as an irregular heartbeat, which they attributed to an overdose of drugs.
He knew....
Years ago, Michael and I were having a deep conversation about life. I can’t remember his question, but he asked me something about how my father would die.
(In the middle of the conversation) he suddenly went silent, stared at me very deeply, and in a firm yet calm tone said, "I’m sorry that I will end my life the same way he did."
Without hesitation, I tried to pull him out of that thought. He shrugged and shook his head, as if he wanted to let me know that he knew what he was saying.
14 years later, now I’m sitting here watching the news, and I see an ambulance leaving the parking lot of his home. Those big doors, the people gathered there, the community formed outside the hospital—what caused his death and what likely led to it—and the memory of that conversation hits my brain, and my tears won’t stop for a moment.
A conclusion he predicted—by those who loved him and by me. But what I hadn’t predicted was how painful it would be when it happened.
The person I couldn’t help—right now—was taken to the Los Angeles medical examiner’s center to be autopsied.
All those indifferences, coldness, and withdrawals that I had spent years trying to create in myself toward him—all of it disappeared, and now I’m finally filled with frustration and grief.
Now I want to say something I’ve never said before, because I want the truth to be spoken at least once.
Our relationship was not "made up," as the media says. Yes, it was an unusual relationship. Because two unusual people—people who didn’t know normal life and had never lived that way—discovered a connection between them, perhaps with a suspicious timing on his part. But in any case, I believe he loved me as much as he possibly could, and I loved him very, very much.
I wanted to "save" him. I wanted to save him from this inevitable fate that ultimately happened.
His family and the people who loved him also wanted to save him, but they didn’t know how. And that goes back 14 years. We were all worried that his end would be like this.
And at the time when I was trying to save him, I almost lost myself.
He had an incredibly energetic, lively force and power that couldn’t be underestimated. When he used it for something good, he became the best. And if he used it for something bad, it really became bad. Even the middle ground never existed for even a second in the presence or actions of Michael Jackson.
In my efforts to save him from his self-destructive behavior and to protect him from the vampires and leeches he managed to attract around him like a magnet, I became very ill, emotionally and spiritually drained, and exhausted.
With my efforts, I had put myself in a trap. I had to take care of my children. I had to make a decision.
I made the hardest decision of my life. I stepped back and let fate come for him. Even though I loved him intensely and tried to stop this fate or reverse it.
After the divorce, for a few years I lived with regret and obsession over him, and what else could I do? A few years after that, I spent it in anger over the whole situation. At times I became completely indifferent, until this happened.
As I sit here, overwhelmed by my grief, and as the reflection and confusion caused by what is the biggest failure of my life comes to me, I follow the news. The scenario of August 16, 1977 (the day Elvis died) is repeating itself for Michael, scene by scene. Scenes I never wanted to see again. Exactly the way he predicted. I’m truly, truly infinitely frustrated and heartbroken.
Every bad experience I had inside me from him in the past died with him.
He was an incredible person, and I was lucky to be able to get that close to him, to have many experiences with him, and to spend years by his side.
I sincerely hope that he can now be free from his suffering, pressures, and troubles. He deserves to be freed from all of them, and I hope he is—or will be—in a better place. I also hope that other people who think they failed to help him can now find peace, because he has finally been freed.
The world is in shock, but he knew better than anyone else how his fate would unfold—and he was right.
I really needed to say this right now. Thank you for listening.
