Rumor: Michael may appear on American Idol
Although this rumor isn’t new, it may still turn into reality. Simon Cowell, a judge on American Idol, said in an interview with Extra that there is a possibility of Michael appearing on American Idol before the end of this season.
Every year, rumors about Michael appearing on American Idol or X-Factor spread. This year, too, the possibility of Michael appearing on both shows has been circulating online. And since a new album and new concerts are also on the way, the likelihood of these rumors has grown.
Last year, Cowell told BBC2 that every year the producers of these shows enter negotiations with the Jackson team, hoping that Michael will finally agree—at least once—to appear as a special guest on these programs.
But with all the tickets for Michael’s 50 concerts selling out within a few hours, it doesn’t seem that Michael would need to appear on such shows for promotion or to attract his audience’s attention. However, these shows definitely need a star like him and the huge publicity they bring.
American Idol’s popularity has dropped by 10% compared to last year, though it still remains the most influential TV show in the U.S., with 20 to 24 million viewers.
Last week, when the show focused on performances of Michael Jackson songs by the 13 contestants, it was a very successful week for American Idol and for Michael’s albums. The level of public participation in last week’s contest—based on the votes sent to the show—was higher than in previous weeks. At the same time, many of Michael’s albums climbed higher on the best-seller lists on sites such as iTunes, Amazon, and elsewhere.
