Eicon and a cinema outing with Michael Jackson

The R&B singer Akon took part in an interview with the German newspaper FAZ (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung): Question: These days it’s rare for a song to play on the radio without your voice being heard. Even Michael Jackson uses your collaboration on his new album. Akon: A phone call with him was one of the best—and also the most awkward—things in my life. Of course I knew his voice. But I was like, how could Michael Jackson call me? I thought my secretary must be joking with me. I said, “Please don’t pretend to be someone else.” And only after Michael Jackson and my secretary spoke at the same time did I realize it was serious. Question: After that, did you go to the studio with him to record the songs you wrote for Michael? Akon: We were on the same wavelength. We had the same ideas, and we liked the same melodies. You’ll hear them soon on Michael’s new album. I was especially surprised by what a cool and humble man he is. I think we even became friends. Michael once said, “Let’s go to the movies.” A public cinema! I had no idea how he wanted to do it without drawing attention from people.
