Thriller dance goes global—and Austin’s mayor joins in

When, in December 1982, Thriller—the second solo music album by Michael Jackson—was born, the music world changed forever. Now, 25 years have passed since the Thriller bombshell, the best-selling album in music history. To mark the occasion, on October 25/26 thousands of people around the world will take part in a simultaneous Thriller dance event (a video from the album of the same name) to set a record in the Guinness World Records book. Many organizers in different corners of the world are busy preparing for the event.

In Austin, Texas, in the United States, organizers also hope that a group performance of the dance will be successful, with a striking turnout. For this purpose, Will Wynn, the mayor of the city, joined a group gathered near City Hall on September 8 to perform the Thriller dance. Although his efforts to get the city manager and members of the city council to dance were unsuccessful, the mayor said that before the group dance began, he had practiced for 10 minutes in his office.

Austin will join Thriller dancers worldwide on October 25 at 1:00 p.m. local time in the green grounds of Long Center. The event will be repeated in the city on the first day of November, on Sixth Street.

Last year, the first global Thriller dance performance took place simultaneously in different parts of the world in 52 cities across all 5 continents, with 1,722 people taking part.
